Beekeeper’s Field Reference

The handful of things I look up most often, in one place: what to check on an inspection and how often to open the hive, how to count varroa and what the numbers mean, what the season is doing at your latitude, and which syrup to mix when. No sign-up, no paywall — bookmark it and use it at the truck.

The hive inspection checklist

The order below is a priority order, not a script — most inspections are finished before you reach the end of it. Work down the list only as far as the question you came to answer.

    Decide what question you are answering

    Every inspection chills brood, risks the queen, and costs the colony half a day of work, so an inspection has one job: answer specific questions about the colony with the fewest frames pulled. Decide what you need to know before you lift the cover, answer it, and close up. Having a look is not a plan.

    Pick the weather and the time of day

    Work a calm, sunny day, ideally above about 15 °C (59 °F), around mid-day when the foragers are out. Fewer bees at home means a gentler colony and less to work around. Cold, wet, or dusk inspections chill brood, sour the bees’ temper, and make eggs much harder to see.

    Smoke lightly and wait

    Give a little smoke at the entrance and under the cover, then wait before you start working. Billowing smoke is usually a sign it is being used to cover for rough handling rather than to calm the bees.

    Work from the outside in

    Pull the second frame first: an outer frame is usually stores and gives you room to manoeuvre. Then work toward the brood nest so you never crush bees against the wall of the box. Lift frames straight up and keep them over the open hive.

    Look for eggs before you look for the queen

    Eggs are proof of a laying queen within roughly the last three days: one egg per cell, standing upright at the bottom. Hold the frame with the light coming over your shoulder onto the cell bottoms. Once you find eggs, stop hunting the queen unless you specifically need to cage, mark, or remove her.

    Read the brood pattern and check all stages

    A solid, mostly contiguous sheet of capped brood with few gaps says a healthy, well-mated queen. A spotty, shotgun pattern can mean an aging queen, disease, inbreeding, or mite pressure — a flag to watch, not an instant verdict. Eggs, young larvae, and capped brood together mean laying has been continuous.

    Check stores and space

    Look for enough capped honey and pollen around the nest to carry the colony to the next flow, and for room for the queen to lay and for incoming nectar. A plugged brood nest with nowhere to expand is swarm-prone.

    Scan for problems as you go, then close up and record it

    Watch for disease signs, excess drones or drone-laying, queen cells, and pests while you handle each frame rather than making a separate pass. Then write down queen and egg status, brood pattern, stores, space, and anything unusual. A spotty pattern means little alone but a great deal as spotty two inspections running.

These are the conventional ranges. Cadence is a judgment call that shifts with your climate, your stock, and how many colonies you can realistically get through in a day.

Varroa counting methods and treatment thresholds

Varroa is the number-one killer of managed colonies, and it almost always kills indirectly: the mite vectors deformed wing virus and others, so a colony can collapse from virus load while the raw mite count still looks survivable. Eyeballing bees for mites badly undercounts, because most mites are hidden under the cappings with the pupae. Monitoring is a numbers discipline, not a look-and-see.

Whichever you use, report the result as mites per 100 bees — divide the mite count from a 300-bee sample by three. That “mite load” percentage is the unit every published threshold below is stated in.

How to count varroa mites with an alcohol wash

    Sample about 300 bees from a brood frame

    Pull a frame with open brood, confirm the queen is on a different frame, then scoop a roughly level half-cup of nurse bees into a wide-mouth jar. Half a cup is approximately 300 bees. Nurse bees on brood frames are where the mites concentrate; a sample of foragers off an outer frame reads low.

    Cover the bees with alcohol or soapy water

    Add enough liquid to fully submerge the sample. Isopropyl alcohol, alcohol-based windshield washer fluid, and dish soap in water all work. Cap the jar with a screened lid that lets mites pass through but holds the bees back.

    Shake vigorously for 60 seconds

    Shake hard for one full minute to break the mites’ grip on the bees. Inadequate shaking is the most common reason for an under-count.

    Strain and count the mites

    Pour the liquid through the screen into a clear container and count the mites that pass through, against the light if they are hard to see.

    Convert the count to mites per 100 bees

    Divide the count from a 300-bee sample by three. Three mites in a 300-bee wash is a 1 percent mite load. Report it this way because mites per 100 bees is the unit every published treatment threshold is stated in.

    Record the count, the method, and what you decided

    Note the number, that it was an alcohol wash rather than a sugar roll or sticky board, the colony’s brood state at the time of sampling, and what you decided to do about the result. One reading is a snapshot; the trend across the season is the signal.

Treatment thresholds

A count below threshold means keep monitoring, not “done for the year” — mite populations grow roughly exponentially with the brood. The decisive treatment window is late summer, once honey supers are pulled and before the winter bees are reared; missing it is the single most common way a colony that looked fine in September is dead by February.

Always follow the label on any treatment product. Mite treatment regulations and approved active ingredients vary by state and country — confirm what is permitted where you keep bees before applying anything.

Seasonal calendar by latitude band

A month-by-month beekeeping calendar written for one region is wrong almost everywhere else. What actually drives the season is latitude: how long the active period runs, how fast the colony builds, when the broodless windows fall. These five bands are the framing our seasonal reasoning uses, and they are a better starting point than a calendar borrowed from someone at a different latitude.

  • Southern hemisphere: the same sequence, shifted by about half a year. A February reading in Melbourne is an August reading in Ohio.
  • Altitude and microclimate override latitude. A high-elevation apiary behaves like one a band further from the equator.

Sugar syrup ratios and feeding

Feeding is a tool with a narrow right-use and several wrong ones. The default answer to “should I feed?” is only when the colony genuinely needs it — a colony with a natural flow or adequate stores should be left alone. Overfeeding backfills the brood nest, can trigger swarming in spring, and invites robbing. Ratios are conventionally given as sugar to water by weight.

When not to feed

  • During a honey flow you intend to harvest. Fed syrup can end up stored in the supers, and it is not honey. Never feed with harvest supers on.
  • When the colony has plenty of stores. You crowd the brood nest and invite problems.
  • Heavy open feeding during a dearth. It sets off robbing frenzies and spreads disease between colonies. Feed inside the hive, reduce entrances on weak colonies, avoid spills, and feed toward evening so activity settles by morning.

One more thing syrup cannot do: syrup is carbohydrate, and brood rearing needs protein. A colony with no incoming pollen and no stored bee bread cannot raise brood well even if it is swimming in syrup.

Common questions

How often should I inspect my beehive?

It depends on the season. Through spring build-up and swarm season, every 7 to 10 days — a strong colony can go from queen cups to a departed swarm inside two weeks. In steady summer, every 2 to 3 weeks is usually enough. During a dearth or late season, open up less often and only with a purpose, because robbing risk is high. In winter, essentially not at all: hefting the hive and watching for cleansing flights is the whole inspection. Colonies at higher latitudes run a compressed version of the same rhythm.

How can I tell if my hive has a queen without finding her?

Look for eggs. Eggs are proof of a laying queen within roughly the last three days — one egg per cell, standing upright at the bottom of the cell. Hold the frame so the light comes over your shoulder and falls onto the cell bottoms, which is the only reliable way to see them. Finding eggs answers the queen question faster than hunting the queen herself, so once you have them, stop looking for her unless you specifically need to cage, mark, or remove her.

What should I check during a hive inspection?

How do I count varroa mites accurately?

Take a measured sample of about 300 bees — roughly a level half-cup — from a frame of open brood where the nurse bees and their mites concentrate, never the frame the queen is on. An alcohol or soapy-water wash of that sample is the reference method and gives the truest number. A powdered-sugar roll uses the same sample size and is non-lethal, which makes it good for repeat sampling, but it reads slightly low because mites stay stuck to sticky bees. A sticky board under a screened bottom measures natural drop over 24 to 72 hours and is the least reliable as a decision tool. At what mite count should I treat for varroa?

The widely published economic thresholds are stated as mite load — the percentage of adult bees carrying mites. In early spring, about 2 percent or above is already concerning, because the mite population compounds all season from wherever it starts. Can I just look at my bees to check for mites?

What is the difference between 1:1 and 2:1 sugar syrup?

The ratio is conventionally given as sugar to water by weight. Thin 1:1 syrup mimics a light nectar flow and stimulates the queen to lay, so it is the spring feed for building a colony up or getting foundation drawn; stop once a real flow is on, or you crowd the brood nest and push the colony toward swarming. Thick 2:1 syrup is the fall stores feed — the bees dehydrate it and cap it for winter. Feed it early enough in fall that they can cure and cap it before it turns cold, because cold bees ripen syrup poorly and late-fall thin feeding largely fails.

How do I feed bees in winter?

With solid sugar — fondant, sugar bricks, or mountain-camp dry sugar — placed directly over the cluster where the bees can reach it without breaking formation. In cold weather bees cannot take or ripen liquid syrup, and feeding it only adds moisture to a hive where condensation is already a serious risk. Solid sugar is the right winter rescue for a cluster that hefts light.

When should I not feed my bees?

Does the beekeeping season depend on latitude?

Substantially. The same calendar week means different things at different latitudes: colonies between 45 and 60 degrees typically run about a month behind those between 30 and 45 degrees on the same date — spring build-up starts roughly four weeks later and swarm season opens about five weeks later — and their whole active season is shorter and more compressed. Below about 15 degrees there is no winter phase at all and the season is driven by rainfall rather than temperature, which also means mites get no natural broodless break. Southern-hemisphere apiaries run the same sequence shifted by about half a year. This is why generic month-by-month beekeeping calendars mislead — what matters is the phase your colony is actually in.
