Multiple Eggs Per Cell: Laying Workers, or a Queen Who Just Started?

A brand-new queen and a colony full of laying workers produce frames that look wrong in almost the same way: several eggs in a cell, scattered placement, nothing tidy about any of it. Two things separate them. Laying-worker eggs tend to sit on the cell wall rather than at the bottom, and laying-worker brood caps out as raised, bullet-shaped domes on worker-sized cells. The check that actually settles it is time: a new queen's laying tidies up within about a week, and laying workers' does not. Getting this backwards is expensive, because the standard fix for one is the worst available treatment for the other.
What a brand-new queen's first frames look like
A queen that has just started laying is often untidy. She will put two or three eggs in a cell, skip cells, and lay in a loose scatter rather than the dense oval you associate with an established queen. This is normal and it is temporary.
What tells you it is a queen rather than workers:
- The eggs are mostly standing at the bottom of the cell, even if there are several.
- The patch is small and central — she starts near the middle of a frame and works out.
- Cappings, when they come, are flat worker cappings, because her eggs are fertilised.
- The mess resolves. Come back in a week and the pattern is tighter and the doubles are mostly gone.
That last point is doing most of the work. A new queen is a colony on an improving trajectory. Laying workers are not.
The signatures of laying workers
None of these is conclusive alone. Together they are.
Eggs on the cell wall. The egg sits stuck partway down the side of the cell instead of standing at the bottom. A flashlight held at an angle shows it in seconds, and it is the tell I look for first.
Several eggs per cell, across many cells. A new queen does this in a handful of cells for a few days. Laying workers do it broadly and keep doing it, because there are many of them laying independently and no one is coordinating.
Bullet brood in worker comb. This is the most diagnostic sign and the one that removes the ambiguity: scattered raised, domed caps on worker-sized cells, which is drone brood in comb that was not built for it. A frame of that across worker foundation is not something a healthy mated queen produces, and once I see it I stop looking for other explanations.
No queen cells anywhere, despite the colony having been queenless long enough to be in this state. A colony with laying workers has usually stopped trying.
The check that settles it
If you are unsure, close the box and come back in about a week. That is the whole method, and it is better than any single visual tell.
- A new queen: the pattern tightens, the doubles disappear, and you start seeing flat worker cappings.
- Laying workers: the frames look the same or worse, and the bullet caps have spread.
A week costs you a week. Acting on a wrong diagnosis costs you a queen, or costs you a colony you ended that would have been laying properly seven days later.
How a colony gets here
Laying workers are a consequence of prolonged queenlessness, not a sudden event. While there is a queen and open brood, workers' ovaries stay suppressed. Remove the queen and let the open brood run out, and that suppression fades over the following weeks until some workers begin to lay.
The practical implication is a deadline, not a date, and there are really two of them. The window for a colony to raise a good queen closes within about a day of the youngest larvae hatching — that is the age I graft from when I am rearing queens on purpose. A colony will still draw cells on older larvae after that, but the queen it produces is worse. Then the biological window closes too, some days later and still well before those larvae are capped.
So it is easy to look at a frame of open brood and assume the colony has options it no longer has — or that it has good options when what it actually has is the makings of a poor queen. Past that point every week makes the colony harder to rescue and more likely to reject a queen you introduce.
This is why the diagnosis matters so much more than it looks. It is rarely the first mistake. It is the visible end of a queenless stretch that went unnoticed — which is why knowing when a colony actually went queenless is worth more than any single inspection finding. What I do about it
I combine the colony over newspaper onto a queenright one, every time.
The laying-worker colony goes on top of a queenright colony with a single sheet of newspaper between them, a couple of small slits cut in it. The bees chew through over a day or two while the odours mix, and I keep the comb, the stores and most of the bees. Putting the problem colony above the good one matters: its bees move down into an established queenright colony rather than the reverse. Then I leave them alone for a few days before opening up, and consolidate the comb once they have united.
Once I see a drone-laying pattern I stop trying to save the colony as a colony and start trying to save its bees and its comb. Combining does both in one visit, without spending brood out of a productive colony every week to do it.
Two things I do not do, and one I simply skip:
- Introduce a queen, caged or direct. A laying-worker colony treats her as an intruder and will usually kill her. I would not spend a purchased queen this way at all.
- Nurse it back with repeated frames of open brood. The standard advice is a frame of eggs and young larvae every week or so, on the theory that brood pheromone suppresses the laying workers until the colony can raise or accept a queen. I do not do it. Once a colony is genuinely laying-worker it is a dead colony, and every frame you feed it comes out of one that would have used it — you can spend six weeks of another hive's brood and still lose the box. A frame of eggs is how I test a colony I only suspect is queenless, not how I treat one I have already confirmed.
- Shake it out. This one works, and some keepers prefer it because it keeps the laying workers out of the receiving colony entirely. But it ends in the same newspaper combine — it just filters the bees first — so it is an extra trip for the same result. I go straight to the combine.
What guessing wrong costs
Diagnose a new queen as laying workers and you end a colony that would have been laying properly a week later. Diagnose laying workers as a new queen and you lose the window in which the colony was still cheap to rescue.
Both come from deciding on one inspection. The frames on any single visit are ambiguous by nature. The trajectory across two visits, a week apart, is not.
